4. Many answers are correct. Here are three examples:

Other valid decompositions: $8 = 6 + 2$ , $8 = 8 + 0$ , $8 = 0 + 8$ .

5. We know the end (9) and the change (4), but not the start.

Think: "What number plus 4 equals 9?"

$5 + 4 = 9$
